Game History

Baseball’s origins trace back to the 18th century, evolving from various bat-and-ball games played in England and North America. By the mid-19th century, it had developed into a formalized sport with standardized rules, gaining widespread popularity across the United States. Often regarded as America’s pastime, baseball quickly became an integral part of the nation’s cultural fabric, fostering community spirit and national identity. Over the decades, the game has expanded globally, evolving through innovations and international competitions while maintaining its foundational traditions and enduring appeal.

Game Rules

Baseball is played between two teams of nine players each, alternating between offense (batting) and defense (fielding). The objective is to score runs by successfully advancing around four bases arranged in a diamond shape.

  • Innings: A standard game consists of nine innings, with each team having one turn to bat and one turn to field per inning. The team with the most runs at the end of nine innings wins.
  • Batting: The offensive team’s players take turns batting. A batter attempts to hit the pitched ball and reach base safely by running to first base and beyond.
  • Pitching and Fielding: The defensive team’s pitcher delivers the ball from the pitching mound to the batter, aiming to prevent successful hits. Fielders work to catch the ball or tag runners to record outs.
  • Scoring: Runs are scored when a player advances safely around first, second, third base, and returns to home plate.
  • Outs: Each team’s offensive inning continues until three outs are recorded, which can occur by strikeouts, flyouts, force outs, or tag outs.
  • Additional Rules: The game includes specific regulations governing strikes, balls, base running, and substitutions, ensuring fair play and competitive balance.
