Game History

Ping pong, or table tennis, began in late 19th-century England as a genteel after-dinner game, often played on dining tables with makeshift equipment. What started with cigar box lids as paddles and champagne corks as balls quickly evolved into a refined sport with global appeal. By the early 20th century, the game gained formal structure and international popularity, leading to the founding of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) in 1926.

Since then, it has become a fast-paced, highly skilled sport played in basements, rec rooms, and Olympic arenas alike. Today, ping pong blends tradition, agility, and precision in a game that’s as accessible as it is competitive-a true classic with a modern edge.

Game Rules

Ping pong is played between two (singles) or four (doubles) players who take turns hitting a lightweight ball across a net on a table.

  • The Serve: Each point begins with a legal serve: the ball must rest on an open palm, tossed at least 6 inches into the air, and struck so it first bounces on the server’s side, then the opponent’s.
  • Scoring: A rally is won when your opponent fails to return the ball legally. Games are played to 11 points, and players must win by at least 2 points.
  • Serving Rotation: Players alternate serves every 2 points. At 10-10, serve alternates after each point.
  • Let Serve: If the ball touches the net on a serve but still lands properly, it is called a let - the serve is replayed.
  • Legal Play: Players must allow the ball to bounce before returning it. A point is lost if the ball is missed, double-hit, or if it’s struck before it bounces.

Fast, focused, and fun - ping pong is a game of sharp reflexes and subtle strategy, made for players who enjoy both finesse and flair.
